Replacing a Roof Under Solar Panels: How Removal & Reinstall Works

In North Texas, a lot of roofs get replaced after hail, and if you have solar, the array has to come off before the roofer can start. Done right, removal & reinstall (R&R) is routine. Done carelessly, it leads to broken panels, leaks at the attachment points, and a system that won't restart.

A proper R&R starts before anything comes down. The system should be tested and documented so you know it was working beforehand, and each panel, optimizer, and string should be labeled so it goes back exactly where it came from.

The panels and racking are then removed and stored safely while the roofer works. Timing matters here: the solar crew and the roofer need to coordinate so the array goes back up as soon as the new roof is finished, not weeks later.

Reinstallation is where leaks are prevented. Every attachment point should get new flashing integrated with the new shingles, not just sealant over the old holes. Worn connectors are a good thing to replace while everything is accessible.

Finally, the system is recommissioned: restarted, checked panel by panel on the monitoring platform, and production confirmed. If your insurance claim covers the roof, ask your adjuster about including the solar R&R; it's often part of the same claim.
